ABOUT

Galakoor Queer Klassiek is a classical choir for singers connected by their queer identity. Choir members share their passion for music and their desire to sing with like-minded people. Our core values are: curiosity, connection, commitment and collaboration.

The repertoire is classical and contemporary and varies seasonally. We sing both large and smaller works. We also explore new emotional values within text and music that arise when people of different sexual orientations and gender identities perform them. This makes us unique in appropriating classical choral music that sometimes seems not to have been written for us.

Galakoor was founded in 2013 by conductor Yt Nicolai and amateur singer Laurens Runderkamp. Yt had been active in the ‘gay movement’ since her student days. In Galakoor – at the time the abbreviation for Gay and Lesbian Amsterdam – she brought her ideals together with her musical ambitions. Until 2017, she was also conductor of the choir.

In 2022, we changed our name to Galakoor Queer Klassiek. We have evolved into a choir that wants to be at the center of the community, never losing sight of quality.
