Born in Singapore, he came to the U.K. for tertiary studies and graduated from Oxford University with degrees in immunology and medicine. His true loves, however, are singing and traveling, and he is forever grateful for the realisation that putting together queer choral festivals in different parts of the globe scratches both itches. When he is not working on his “choir-self” you can often find him relaxing with his “wine-self”. Hsien is a Legato Board Member and, until this year, was the representative for the Asia region on the Global Alliance of Queer Choirs. Simon White (he/they) Is a queer, proud singer who has over twenty years of experience managing and developing queer choirs and theatre groups across Europe. He was a founding director of the Global Alliance of Queer Choirs and is a passionate advocate to help everyone across the globe to connect with their voice and enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of singing in a group or in the shower. The Sessions “It's all about the music” Choral conducting for beginners How do our values affect our work as MDs? Conducting Toolbox Choral conducting for beginners. José Mena Polo The seminar on choral conducting for beginners offers an intensive immersion into the basic principles of choral conducting. This seminar is designed to provide participants with a fundamental understanding of choral conducting and to develop practical skills for leading beginner-level choirs. How do our values affect our work as MDs? Misza Czerniak We, the MDs of queer ensembles, operate at a particular intersection. We are in charge of music, but we also work for social change. Furthermore, we deal with a marginalised community coming together to express its hopes, dreams, and sometimes anger, to support each other and stand with each other in solidarity, but also to just have fun and make beautiful music. How does this background, and how do the values that bring us here, affect our work? Let’s explore together the connection between what we believe in and how we work as MDs. The intelligent choir - innovative ways to conduct your choir. Helga Margrét Marzellíusardóttir Should Choirs be conducted? If yes, then why, when, and how? How can we train our choir to be an Intelligent choir, to develop their musical skills and ability to focus on the structure of the music; Rhythm, intonation, sound, expression, and performance? We take a look at the New Piece Methodology, Rotated Leadership, and Vocal Painting - different ways of combining conducting technique and effective ways of interacting with your choir members. “Get Organised” Do you know who you are, what you want, and how you are going to get there - no really? “There’s a Place For Us”: Growing your choir’s audience and membership so you can thrive Finding the sweet spot between your choir and your community Do you really know who you are? what you want and how you are going to get there - no really? Martin Brophy & Simon White To get where you want to go you need a good roadmap to get there. Is your choir dysfunctional, not sure who they are, confused about what you do? The starting point is your Vision, Mission, and Values. Discuss and create your own 10-point plan to create and review your choir's road map to success. “There’s a Place For Us”: Growing your choir’s audience and membership so you can thrive. Dan Jarvis In this session, LEGATO Trustee Dan Jarvis will talk through how to be strategic in developing a plan to develop and grow your choir's audiences and membership so it can thrive, whilst staying true to who you are. The workshop will cover: Identifying who your target audiences are (and who do you want them to be) Understanding your mission, vision & values to inform your key messages How your programme and audience plan can (and should) work together How to tell the story of your choir Attracting and retaining new members Practical tips and ways to plan a marketing campaign The session is aimed at intermediate and advanced choirs. Finding the sweet spot between your choir and community. Simon White Queer choirs around the world provide an amazing, nourishing, and safe space for all to thrive and grow, as singers, as individuals, and as a chosen family. At the same time, they can have an important and valuable impact on the wider community. This session explores: (i) the role and impact a choir can have on both its members and the community around it; (ii) real life examples of how different queer choirs around the world think and work with these two communities; and (iii) how to promote debate and resolve conflict within your choir as to how your group wants to find the sweet-spot between choir and community. “Let’s Talk Choirs” Health checkup for choirs Singing the rainbow: equity, diversity inclusion and belonging in choirs Make a dream come true Health Check for Choirs - Creating and sharing choir strategies. Singing the Rainbow: equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging in choirs. Hsien Chew In our increasingly polarised world, there is an urgent need for LGBTQ choirs to discuss diversity. We have a long tradition of counteracting division by building communities, questioning barriers, and celebrating difference through song, but having our choirs reflect the makeup of society remains a challenge for all of us. Drawing on their own experience of migration and queerness, Hsien will take you on a journey of empathy to understand why embedding diversity in our choirs is vital for all of us, look at why we sometimes struggle to achieve this and examine various strategies some choirs have taken to be the change. Make your dreams come true. Martin Brophy How to get a choir started; make a festival; Singing for equality or Connecting with choirs around the globe. "If you build it, they will come." "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." “The two quotes that have inspired me the most, come and share what inspires you”. In 1992 a few enthusiasts started the "Schwulen Berner Sänger" (gay Bern singers) or SCHWUBS. In the following years, SCHWUBS grew to the handsome size of 45 members, but then shrank back to the current 16 singers. Under the direction of our pianist Werner Bucher, SCHWUBS is always lively, (self) ironic, (self) critical, willingly looks in the mirror and also holds it up to others. Or, in other words, we sing not just to entertain, but also to bring our audience closer to our gay world. equally mixed classic/rock/pop/musicals WEBSITE INSTAGRAM TWITTER FACEBOOK 2018 Manage your Choir information Now you can change, add or remove the information about your choir Want to change your profile picture? Change the description of your choir? • CLASSICAL LESBIANS

CLASSICAL LESBIANS BERLIN GERMANY Type: SSAA Founded: 1996 # Wonderful Supporting members 3 # Wonderful members 20 ABOUT Wir singen klassische Chorliteratur. GO CLASSICAL, Lesbians! We are 21 women. Which means 21 different ages and backgrounds. And 21 opinions on our dress code. Not to speak of any choreography! BUT we are united in our love of women and classical music! Since 1996, we meet once a week and with lots of fun and enthusiasm, we rehearse A Capella songs from Early Music to modern pieces. We relish the sound of our voices coming together and of experimenting with unusual harmonies. With unbending enthusiasm, patience and repetition of the ‘Legato-Mantra’ our new choir leader the professional singer Sibylle Fischer get us to sing ever higher and brighter notes. only classical WEBSITE INSTAGRAM TWITTER FACEBOOK 1999 Manage your Choir information Now you can change, add or remove the information about your choir Want to change your profile picture? Change the description of your choir? Gender-neutral Language Statement The purpose of gender-neutral language is to avoid word choices which may be interpreted as biased, discriminatory or demeaning by implying that one sex or social gender is the norm. VIEW MORE Gender Identity There is a generational divide in how we think about gender. In order to bridge this gap, those of us who were raised with a more limited view of gender can take this as an opportunity to explore gender with new eyes, to read and ask questions to better understand gender’s complexity. SONGBIRDS CARDIFF UNITED KINGDOM Type: SSAA Members: 35 Founded: 2012 ABOUT We are Songbirds, a community choir for LGBT+ women and non-binary people based in Cardiff. We were set up in 2012 and currently have around 35 members, but we always welcome new members! We rehearse every Monday from 7:30pm at City United Reformed Church. We pride ourselves on our inclusivity and we aim to be a supportive and friendly group where members can have fun and make a beautiful sound. We rehearse once a week in Cardiff and perform all over the local area when we can, often for local charities, representing the LGBT+ community and, importantly, enjoying ourselves in the process. The ethos of the choir is acceptance and fun; we are a community and a family, and we place more importance on inclusivity than being note-perfect (although, thanks to our Musical Director Rosie, we do make a beautiful sound)! If you want to know exactly what to expect if you decide to join, visit our New Members page. We put on our own concerts once or twice a year, usually in the summer and at Christmas, and often perform at Pride Cymru and the Big Queer Picnic. We’ve sung at events held by Stonewall, Cardiff University and Ty Hafan, as well as weddings, carol services and joint events with our friends South Wales Gay Men’s Chorus and Cardiff Trans Singers. The three groups are hosting the Hand in Hand Festival in Cardiff in August 2019. We are always delighted to welcome new members to our choir. During the summer of 2013, a group of men gathered around the idea of creating a new all male choral ensemble dedicated to providing quality musical entertainment while educating its singers and furthering a positive image and appreciation of the LGBTQ community. Steel City Men’s Chorus’ mission is to create community, educate, and give voice to LGBTQ issues through music and service. In addition to our performances, we participate in a number of local community outreach programs, supporting AIDS Alabama and Community Kitchens of Birmingham during our inaugural year. During the summer of 2013, a group of men gathered around the idea of creating a new all male choral ensemble. From meetings around dining room tables, Steel City Men’s Chorus was born. From our first rehearsal in August, 2013, until our first performance on December 6, 2013, some 35 men and their supporters worked in a whirlwind to create and incorporate a new non-profit and produce a show. Our sold out holiday show, Our First Noel , told us that we were on the right track. Steel City Men’s Chorus is a proud member of Chorus America and the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA). In October, 2013, a group of SCMC leaders attended the GALA Leadership Symposium in Atlanta, coming away with some wonderful ideas to enhance our organization as well as feedback affirming the solid foundation we have built. Membership in Steel City Men’s Chorus is open to anyone, 18 and older. Singing members must be male or identify as male and be able to sing a male vocal part (TTBB). Non-singing membership is open to both men and women who do not wish to sing but desire to support SCMC through active voting membership. All members must pay dues as required by the Board of Directors to remain in good standing.
